Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
